Installing Ubuntu 10.04 on a Western Digital drive failed
Today I tried to reinstall my media center / HTPC which is Ubuntu based.

I am quite happy with Ubuntu in combination with XBMC as Home Theater PC / mediacenter. But I needed (or wanted) more space. So I decided to do a fresh install of the Lucid Lynx release on a leftover 500 Gb Western Digital drive (Type: WDC WD5000AAKS-00D2B0).
But to my surprise it wouldn’t recognize the western digital hard drive when selecting the install option, something that has not happened to me before. Especially strange as it did see the hard disk with for instance gparted or when adding it as extra drive with the current installation. Strange eh?
So this is the procedure I followed to fix this situation:
- Boot into the Ubuntu live cd (so do not use install yet)
- Check if you see the disk you want to install Ubuntu on with GParted (System -> Preferences -> GParted)
- Open up a terminal window
- Type in the following: sudo apt-get remove dmraid (it should just remove dmraid, no other packages, but it won’t harm if it does as it is just a live cd right)
- Select the “Install Ubuntu” icon on your desktop
- And voila, it will see the hard drive
So this trick did the job for my Western Digital WDC WD5000AAKS-00D2B0 drive, but it will most likely also work for other hard drives that Ubuntu doesn’t recognize when installing. Also this trick may also apply to previous versions of Ubuntu like Ubuntu 9.10 or Ubuntu 9.04. It can’t hurt to try if an Ubuntu install fails because you can’t see the hard disk.
